Personal Growth: Purpose

Hot Wisdom

Or Revelations in the Sauna

By Mary Lee LaBay, Ph.D.

I want to share with you my recent realization of how virtues, values, and choices so intimately fit together with a person’s purpose and their path.

Some of my best meditations take place in the sauna after a good work out. My body is relaxed and the radiant heat wraps me in comfort and calm. It is a prime opportunity to give myself permission to go deep within and play in the mind field. And one of my favorite places to go in those moments is to a sacred scene to meet my spirit guide or guides.

That is where I went yesterday. I imagine different locations, dependent on the guide I want to connect with. So this scene was Stonehenge. I have visited there on several occasions in this lifetime, and have had many lives in that area of the world. It has great spiritual significance to me, and I find it easy to move directly into a spiritual state of mind when I return there in my mind.

Within a brief moment of visualizing that ancient stone structure, I was in the presence of a man who is an occasional guide for me. While not my primary guide at this time, he has certainly provided guidance and wisdom for many lifetimes, while in both the physical and the spiritual realms. His eyes were shining brightly and his energy was inviting me to join him.

We talked a while about my concerns and challenges, as well as my accomplishments. I explained that I have been working very hard on developing Awareness Engineering, for the goal of facilitating the growth and awareness of all seekers. And yet, my concern was that I had been neglecting my Self by not taking time for meditation and reflection and not making it to the gym for an entire week. My body was hurting and my energy was feeling scattered.

He asked me if I was having to do this for survival, that my food and shelter depended on my working at such a pace. No, of course not. I am doing this out of love of my work and with the goal of elevating consciousness around the world.

Again, he asked if I had a gun held to my head to do what I am doing. And again the answer was of course not. I am choosing to do this, and I feel so good to be accomplishing my purpose.

My guide proceeded to explain to me that whenever you have choice—when the metaphorical gun is not being held to your head—it is inherent in the equation that you are making decisions based on your value system. The branch of philosophy called Ethics covers morality, based on an individual’s values and virtues. He had me review my own value list—homework that many of my clients and most all of my students are assigned.

At the top of my list I have placed such things as consciousness, existence, health, fun…(along with other items). As I revisited my list, I realized that while I was moving toward my purpose, perhaps even fulfilling great portions of it, I was not accomplishing it on the proper path.

Yes, many roads can lead to your purpose or a goal. And you have the choice to take the road that aligns with your value system, or one that does not. When choosing the latter, expect bumps that show up in your life as stress, fatigue, distress, dysfunction, setbacks, and so forth. As I have been experiencing such stress and physical symptoms, coupled with insufficient “me” time, I am left contemplating the move to a more auspicious path.

One that will include more trips to the gym and more time in the sauna gaining morsels of hot wisdom!
