As we settle into 2017, it’s natural to use the New Year as an opportunity to assess ourselves, reflecting on what we’ve accomplished in the past year and what we hope to tackle next. One of the best ways we can help ourselves meet our goals is to get organized!
I recently met a woman who runs a small jewelry shop online. She mentioned that her inspiration – and her sales – had been waning recently. As we talked, the source of her troubles became clear; “stuff” had gotten in the way, quite literally.
Her workspace had grown so cluttered that when she sat down to make jewelry, her mind would draw a blank. She couldn’t find the materials she wanted and the clutter made the space uncomfortable to occupy, so her favorite pastime slowly became fraught with stress. In order to let the creative energy back into her workspace she had to clear the clutter.
Does any of this resonate with you? If so, you too could benefit from a thorough decluttering, and now is the perfect time to do it! We are deep into Capricorn’s cycle, and the energy is all about getting organized.
Capricorn is extremely practical, sometimes mercilessly so. When you tap into this energy, you may even find that the daunting task of decluttering your space transforms from a chore to a fun, rewarding project. Indeed, shifting the way you view the task of cleaning up is the first step to getting it done, and will make it more enjoyable.
I recently wrote about the benefits of setting clear intentions. This will come in handy here, as well. First, envision what you hope to achieve by cleaning up your home or office. Do you want peace of mind, a more guest-ready space, or room for a hobby or home business? Perhaps you’ve let unneeded possessions pile up and need to sift through everything to pare down your belongings? Setting a clear goal will help keep you on track.
As part of this exercise, close your eyes and envision your home. In your mind’s eye, see yourself going through each room and examine what needs to be done in each space to transform it into a positive, functional space.
Next, envision these rooms as you want them to be after your cleaning frenzy. Take a moment to let the rewards and benefits of having a clean space resonate with you.
The jewelry designer mentioned that the act of creating was her way of relaxing after a long day of work – this was her reward, if you will. But as we went through this exercise, she shifted the reward from relaxation to enjoying her surroundings and being able to find exactly what she needs at her work station without stress.
There are several rewards from harnessing Capricorn’s energy and getting organized. Here are just a few of many:
- You will feel more focused and at ease in your living space: Many studies have linked emotional and mental wellbeing to an organized, clean home.
- By getting rid of excessive clutter, you will feel lighter and more energized.
- You will be more productive: When you don’t have to spend time rummaging through a cluttered desk or closet to find what you need, you can be more efficient.
- Better sleep: when you feel more at ease in your home, spend less time shuffling around stacks of papers, and spend more time doing what you love, you’ll feel more accomplished and pleasantly tired when it’s time to retire for the night.
Once you’ve set your intentions and envisioned the rewards of getting organized, the next step is just as important: let go of any negative emotions involving the state of your home. Life happens – we all let things go from time to time, but beating ourselves up about it only further hinders our ability to make a positive change.
Now you’re ready to get to work. If the task still feels overwhelming to you, break it down into manageable pieces. You could try picking one room per day, or even setting a timer to break the task up into several, smaller organizing sessions.
As you go through your belongings, view them with a critical and honest eye: do you need it? Do you love it? Does it help you accomplish a goal or task? If you don’t answer yes to at least one of those questions, it may belong in the donation pile.
Capricorn transitions into Aquarius on January 20, so we have just a few more days to answer Capricorn’s call for order. I hope that these suggestions will help you take control of your living space so you can start enjoying the benefits of a happy, healthy, Capricorn-approved home this year.
