Past Lives

Among the most popular branches of hypnotherapy is the practice of past life regression – the deliberate, conscious retrieval of memories and experiences that occurred in other lifetimes. In doing so, we aim to deepen the understanding of:

  • Our relationships with other people
  • Personality traits and patterns of behavior
  • Health issues, pain and discomfort
  • The origins and meaning of our occupations
  • The source of our knowledge and wisdom

But how can we be sure that what we uncover during regression therapy is genuine memory and not a fantasy of the mind in dream-state?

It’s a fair question, and one that routinely pops up among my new hypnotherapy and past life clients and students. While there are a number of ways to determine authenticity, I’ve selected one of the techniques I use during sessions: monitoring physical indicators to separate memory from fantasy.

Authenticating a past life through eye movement

Remembering a past life does not feel the same as remembering something that occurred in this life. Nor does it feel the same as relating a fantasy or making up a tale. To see the difference between the two for yourself, enlist the help of a friend and work through the following exercise.

  • Step 1: Place two chairs directly across from one another, separated by a few feet, and sit facing one another.
  • Step 2: Tell your friend about something that actually happened, perhaps something you did last weekend or even a memory from earlier in your life. As you recount the memory, instruct your friend to take note of your eyes. Pick something that will last for about five minutes, giving your friend plenty of time to become familiar with the movement of your eyes and your expressions as you talk about facts.
  • Step 3: Now have your friend watch your eyes as you tell a fictional story from the first person perspective. Again, try to make something up for about five minutes to give them plenty of time to become familiar with your mannerisms during a fantasy.
  • Step 4: Have your friend take careful note of the frequency of your blinking, whether you look more to the right or left, or upward or downward, whether or not you fidget, the brightness in your eyes, and the tension in your face. There should be a noticeable difference between your mannerisms when you are relating an actual experience, and when you are making up a story.

This is a fascinating exercise that can help you distinguish between memory and fantasy as you explore past lives. Even more significantly, it can be used as a tool of personal insight, giving you subtle clues as to when you may not be telling the whole truth in your daily interactions with people.

Are you curious what your past lives will reveal about you?

Personal Growth & Past Life Regression

by marylee on November 3, 2012

We reincarnate in order to grow, expand, experience more, and become more fully conscious. That means becoming aware of our blind spots, any unconscious patterns or cycles of behavior that may be limiting us—and doing something about them.

This can be uncomfortable, but the process becomes more interesting and productive—as well as easier and more clear—when we can access other lifetimes as well as this one. Sometimes, when a particular pattern of behavior began many lifetimes ago, past life regression is the only way to make sense of it. By viewing our cycles of behavior over lifetimes, we gain clarity about our unique quirks, habits, character, fears, and choices. That can help us honestly assess our strengths and weaknesses, and show us where we need to make changes.

When we are working with information from past lives, we can also be more objective about ourselves. Experiencing a past life can feel almost as if we are watching a movie about someone else. We can observe ourselves and our behavior in a more clear and objective way than we can when looking back over the events of, say, the last weeks or months. When we watch that “other” person behaving in the same dysfunctional ways that we do, it is often easier to see what we want to change. The penny drops, and we “get it” in a way that isn’t always possible from the perspective of only one life.

My client “Sarah” was in her thirties and lived in the Midwest. She revisited a life on the prairie as an early settler. In this former lifetime, she would wash the clothes and hang them out on the line to dry, always keeping her attention on the horizon. She was waiting for someone, or something, to come along and make her life exciting. This was an extremely dull lifetime, because no one ever came over the horizon who made her life the way she wanted it to be.

When I asked her what she could learn from that lifetime that would be relevant to the life she was living now, Sarah exclaimed that her current life was just as dull! She had a washer and a dryer and a condo, but she was still waiting for someone to knock on her door and make her life less isolated and more exciting. Sarah awakened to the fact that if she wanted excitement, she would have to generate it. She understood that she could not go on repeating the same pattern and expecting a different result. In the life on the prairie, she had died alone and unfulfilled. She was determined not to let that happen again.

She had been blind to this trait in her personality. Only by seeing the pattern and experiencing it through a past life, was she  able to clearly recognize the need to change an important aspect of her life.

What patterns do you suppose you may have that are based on past life experiences?

The Map of Self Discovery

by marylee on October 27, 2012

Before beginning any journey, it is good to be clear where we are going and what we want to get out of the trip. In the same way, when embarking on the journey of discovering who you are and what are the experiences tucked away in your very soul, it is a good idea to have an idea of the terrain. What can you experience, what might you remember?

Here is a map, of sorts, of the benefits people have experienced as a result of self-discovery through past life regressions. This may give you a glimpse of the many adventures you may encounter as you explore your own lifetimes.

Like all heroes’ journeys, discovering our past lives can be both uncomfortable, and tremendously fulfilling and exhilarating. Why undertake it? The rewards of past life regression are gifts we give ourselves—for our soul’s ever-increasing capacity to experience joy, love, and esteem, and for our spirit’s ultimate enrichment.

The benefits are seen and unseen, known with the mind and with the heart, spiritual, psychological, emotional, and material. Of course, the richest benefits will be those that are most important to you, and that you seek out deliberately.

What do you want to take away from this process? What gifts are most precious to you? If you could get anything you wanted from past life regression, what would that be? That is the gift you will give yourself. Add your answers to these questions to the benefits listed here.

  • Richer relationships
  • Understanding your children, significant others, friends, co-workers, and family members
  • Remove blocks to romance, career goals, personal empowerment and more
  • Learn about your soul group – who are your twin souls, or your soul mate?
  • Heal a phobia, unexplained pains, chronic symptoms or illness
  • Understand the origin of birthmarks, personality traits, opinions and perspectives
  • Get clues to your purpose, and why you chose this life or even your family
  • Have clarity around your character and values
  • Why you have certain challenges or are blessed with specific talents
  • Personal growth through greater self-knowledge
  • Broader perspectives through having revisited a wider range of experiences and cultures
  • Personal change through know knowing your past life choices and decisions, and how to improve upon them this time
  • Regain personal empowerment
  • and so very much more!

How clear is your own personal map? Do you know where you have been and who you are? Where are you on your journey – and re you enjoying it?

Addressing Fear of Heights

by marylee on October 20, 2012

A man came to my office because he was afraid of heights. He couldn’t even climb a household ladder.

In the session, I asked him to go back to a time when he experienced this fear. He told me he had trouble going out on balconies, and had trouble even climbing a ladder to change a light bulb or paint.

I asked him to go back further, and immediately he found himself in a wagon train going from the east coast to the wild, wild west. He was traveling with his wife, who was one of the only females in the group.

There were many single men who wanted to have a female companion. One day he took a walk with three men. Suddenly, they grabbed him and pushed him over a cliff.

Naturally that was a traumatic experience that stuck with him, and was still creating subconscious tremors. While we generally have to apply additional techniques for desensitization, in this case  it was enough to simply view that lifetime to get relief. Just being aware of the circumstances of that lifetime, and separating those experiences from his experiences here, was enough for him to be free of this debilitating fear.

I saw this man about three months later, and he reported that he was able to freely climb ladders and enjoy a life free of his fear of heights.

Can You Be Your Own Ancestor?

While exploring past lives, we are following the lineage of an individual’s soul while it moves in and out of its various lifetimes. This is, of course, different from tracing a person’s family tree. However, in certain instances there may be a very interesting combination when an individual’s sequence of past lives appears on a [...]
